How to Install an Expert Advisor in MetaTrader 5

BullsEdges algo trading guide: A step-by-step guide to installing an EA in MT5: copying the files, attaching to a chart, loading settings and checking it is really running.

Installing an Expert Advisor takes a few minutes, but small mistakes - the wrong folder, Algo Trading off, the wrong symbol - are behind many "my EA doesn't trade" questions. Here is the full process.

BullsEdges algo trading application: Verify the EA version, symbol, timeframe and loaded inputs in the logs before allowing the first automated order.

1. Find the data folder

In MetaTrader 5, click File > Open Data Folder. A window opens at the terminal's data directory. EAs live in the MQL5/Experts folder. Settings files (.set) go in MQL5/Presets.

2. Copy the files

  • .ex5 is the compiled EA. This is what MT5 runs. It is enough on its own.
  • .mq5 is the source code. Optional, but useful if you want to edit or recompile in MetaEditor.

Copy the .ex5 (and .mq5 if you have it) into MQL5/Experts. If the EA came with include files (.mqh) or indicators, they go into MQL5/Include and MQL5/Indicators.

3. Refresh the Navigator

In the Navigator panel (Ctrl+N), right-click Expert Advisors and choose Refresh. Your EA should now appear in the list.

4. Open the right chart

Open the symbol the EA is designed for, with your broker's exact symbol name. Gold might be XAUUSD, XAUUSD.m, XAUUSD.e or GOLD depending on the broker. Choose the timeframe the EA expects.

5. Attach the EA

Drag the EA onto the chart. In the dialog:

  • Common tab: tick "Allow Algo Trading".
  • Inputs tab: set the parameters, or click Load and choose the .set file supplied with the EA.

Click OK.

6. Turn on Algo Trading

The Algo Trading button in the toolbar must be green. If it is off, no EA on any chart can trade.

7. Check it is really running

  • A small icon in the top-right corner of the chart shows the EA's name and whether it is active.
  • Open the Experts tab in the Toolbox (Ctrl+T). You should see a "loaded successfully" line and any messages the EA prints.
  • The Journal tab shows connection status and errors such as "trade disabled" or "not enough money".

Common problems

  • "Trade is disabled" - the account is logged in with the read-only investor password, or the symbol is not tradeable.
  • "Invalid stops" - the stop loss or take profit is closer than the broker's minimum distance.
  • No trades at all - check the EA's own filters: trading hours, news filter, spread limit. Many EAs print why they are waiting.
  • Settings reset - inputs saved with the chart override the EA's defaults. Always check the Inputs tab after an update.

One chart per strategy

Do not attach the same EA with the same magic number to two charts of the same symbol. Both copies will think every trade is theirs, and position management will go wrong.

Once it is running, keep the terminal online - ideally on a VPS - and check the Experts log daily for the first week.
